It cannot rank for anything no matter how well it is optimized. If a page is indexed but not ranking, it has cleared that first hurdle and now it needs to compete on relevance and authority. Always check your index status first before doing any ranking work. You can spend months optimizing a page that Google is not even looking at.

Should I noindex pages like thank you pages, privacy policies, and login pages?

For thank you pages and login pages, yes. There is no search value there and no reason to waste crawl budget on them. Privacy policies and terms pages are more of a judgment call. They are not going to rank for anything meaningful, but some people prefer to leave them indexed rather than have Google think you are hiding something. The bigger point is just to be intentional about it. A lot of sites have pages indexed that absolutely should not be, simply because nobody ever thought about it.

My page was ranking and then disappeared from Google. What happened?

A few things can cause this. A noindex tag might have been accidentally added during a site update. A URL might have changed without a redirect in place. Someone may have edited the robots.txt file. Or the page’s content slipped relative to competing pages and Google decided something else deserved that spot. That will tell you right away whether the page is still indexed, why it was excluded, and what Google is seeing right now.

How do I know if my canonicals are actually working?

Go to the URL Inspection Tool in Search Console and look for the “Google-selected canonical” field. If it matches the canonical you set on the page, you are good. If Google has picked a different URL, something else on your site is sending a stronger signal. Nine times out of ten it is your internal links. If your links point to a different version of the page than your canonical tag does, Google is going to follow the links. Align everything: the canonical tag, your internal links, and your sitemap all need to point to the same URL.

Can a slow website cause indexing problems?

It can, but it is not as simple as “slow site equals indexing problems.” Speed alone is rarely why a page gets excluded. Where it actually hurts you is over time. A server that is consistently slow, timing out, or throwing 5xx errors trains Google to crawl your site less often. When that happens, new pages take longer to get evaluated and existing issues take longer to get caught and fixed. A fast, stable site is a signal that your site is worth Google’s time. A flaky one is a signal that it is not.

What should I do if Google keeps re-excluding a page I have already fixed and resubmitted multiple times?

Stop resubmitting and start actually diagnosing the problem. If Google keeps rejecting the same page after multiple attempts, the surface fix is not addressing what is actually wrong. Look for canonical conflicts pulling authority somewhere else, internal links pointing to a different version of the page, content that is too similar to another page on your site, or content that is simply not differentiated enough to stand on its own. Sometimes the real answer is that the page needs to be merged into a stronger page rather than kept as a separate URL that Google has decided is not worth indexing.

Is it possible to have too many pages indexed?

Absolutely. More indexed pages is not automatically a good thing. It is only good if those pages are genuinely useful and clearly differentiated from each other. Sites that have gone heavy on auto-generated content, thin location pages, or near-duplicate service pages often see their overall performance suffer because of it. Google has gotten very good at spotting this pattern at scale. A site with 80 strong pages will outperform a site with 400 mediocre ones almost every time. Running a content audit, figuring out what to improve, what to combine, and what to cut is a real SEO strategy that most people overlook.
